Little Black [Bridesmaids] Dress

Most women have a favorite "little black dress." If they don't currently own one, they're aware that their life will somehow be enhanced by the possession of one. Of course, I'm kidding about that last sentence, but I will say that I have been most pleased with my investment this time last year in a Little Black Dress from White House Black Market. I have worn THREE times in the year since I bought it! That's got to be some kind of record. Here is me in it before a wedding Brant and I went to in KC. Frankly, I feel so pretty in it, I kind of wish I could wear it to my OWN wedding!!



When thinking about bridesmaids dresses, I can't help but think about the nine I've worn in the last 12 years. It's no secret that -- try as she may to do otherwise -- a bride will be asking her friends and sisters to pay a premium for dresses they'll never wear.

But the Little Black Dress...now there's a bridesmaids dress I can get behind!

So I have asked my bridesmaids to choose one from their closet, one from my closet, one from a friend's closet, or if they want to and can afford to, they certainly have the option of buying one. Since they're choosing, they can choose how much, if anything, to spend on their dress. They can also choose the dress that fits them best and makes them feel the most beautiful (as long as it's knee length :) ) and hopefully they really will be able to wear it again, if they haven't already been wearing it because it's something they already own and love.

I found some pictures online of other wedding parties adopting this principle and am excited for the aesthetic that will be created when I'm wearing my white dress and the women standing up for me are wearing Little Black Dresses.

(We didn't leave the guys out in the cost savings: We've asked them to wear their own (or borrow a) solid black suit.)

    This is a great idea! Love it! I've never heard of this before, but I totally think it's something I would do (I'm not married, no plans yet!)
    I'm not a huge fan of bridesmaids dresses, it's the brides taste being forced onto everyone else in the wedding party lol and it may be a colour a bridesmaid would never normally be seen in, not right for a range of skin tones, and not right for all body shapes etc. And then there's the fact you all end up wearing the same thing....
    This way is going to be much better, and you're right, I think it's going to look really good in pics. Everyone will be feeling their best in their sexy black dress! : )

    As a bridesmaid, you know I thank you for this. I also thank you for the motivation to loose the weight I can <8 weeks after giving birth so I'll get to wear my new little black dress again.

    As someone who has been engaged twice but never married, I have had plenty of opportunity to consider all the wedding details. I really love this idea, and I am certain your bridesmaids will too. I can't wait to see the details of your day unfold, and I am certain it will be a lovely, elegant, truly classy wedding! I hope you don't mind if I live a bit vicariously through you... :o)

    I did this for my wedding and I loved that all my bridesmaids found something that they loved, and looked and felt beautiful in. That's all I wanted, for everyone to be as happy as I was that day, and no one is happy in a seafoam-colored confection.

    I also have to say a piece for LBD. I met my husband in a $10 LBD from Contempo Casual (that's right, Contempo) in 1999 and would still be wearing it if I could get it past my thighs. The LBD rocks.

    this is a great idea i was thinking of it then i wasnt sue about the pictures if all the different styles would look good now i have seen it im going to follow in you foot steps and tell my bridesmaids today to pick a dress they love tank you for posting these pictures there beautiful

    My daughter-in-law did this and all the bridesmaids felt as if they found a dress for their body type. Was a beautiful wedding...

    I have asked my bridesmaids to do the same thing, however, I'd like them all do be in the same fabric and no longer then knee length.
